Bill Xia – teaching practicum in Shanghai

How was your experience on your teaching practicum?

I have had a great time teaching mathematics in a summer camp at Shanghai. I was allocated a group of 12 students and I was surprised on the first day by how passionate they are about mathematics.

The camp is well organised and the school has been very supportive in every way of the two-week experience. I also learnt new things from Chinese students from good places for foods to powerful mobile apps in China!

It was a joy to work with the other teachers and the interaction between our classes were amazingly fun.

What was your favourite/ most memorable moment?

My favourite part of the program was the chance of travelling and meeting with different students coming from all parts of China.

Hearing their different academic stories and witnessing their potential in mathematics makes the teaching experience even more enjoyable.

I won’t forget those fun games we played together, like “Werewolves” and “Escape the Room”. We loved a little “competition” with other classes too!

Would you recommend the program to a friend and why?

I will definitely recommend the program to a friend, not only because the camp has been very accommodating in many ways but also because of the resourceful insight I gained from teaching and interacting with young students and other teachers in China.

It has built my confidence to teach to classes of students and enjoy more fun with maths.
