Modern Languages student Annabel from the University of Southampton spent five weeks in summer 2018 volunteering as an English teacher in Beijing.

How was your experience on the program?

The program was so much fun! I learnt so much and met some amazing people.

I really enjoyed teaching and getting to know a class and see how they progress with the help and new skills given to them.

Learning Mandarin was definitely something I wanted to work on while I was there and the student led classes definitely allowed me to learn so much, and it was great to see the kids so excited about teaching us their language and culture.

Teach English at summer camps in China, Taiwan and Japan

Would you recommend the program to a friend and why?

Yes, it is a great way to travel, gain teaching experience, speak to new people and learn so much.

Everyone who takes part wants to have fun and make the most of their time in China!

What did you learn from taking part in the program?

I learnt about how to teach effectively, to deal with homesickness and being so far away, how to control a class, I gained more self-confidence and (the best part, as a language student) learnt some Mandarin!

The capital and cultural hub of China, Beijing is home to all its must-see sights. Spend your spare time hiking the Great Wall, exploring the Forbidden City, or cycling through ancient alleyways. There's plenty to see off the main tourist trail as well, and your host family will be more than happy to show you around while introducing local customs and cuisine.

How will the program help with your future career/ studies?

I am looking at becoming a language teacher so this gave me a good idea of what teaching might be like.

What was your favourite/ most memorable moment?

Watching my class do the speech competition and seeing how hard they worked and how much their English had improved in the 10 days at the camp.
