Au pair TEFL course

This specialist course leads to the awarding of a 70 hours Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate with a specialisation in teaching one-on-one. Designed specifically with the needs of au pairs and homestay tutors in mind, this course prepares you to become an outstanding English tutor as well as the best mentor, sibling and role model to your students. The Au Pair TEFL Course is also an invaluable qualification for your future career, providing key knowledge and skills valued by employers for jobs in private tutoring, classroom teaching, coaching or mentoring. 

Teaching and learning

This comprehensive course covers the following essential topics:

  • The role of an au pair or homestay tutor
  • Being a role model, older sibling and mentor to your child
  • TEFL teaching methodologies: communicative, task-based and active learning
  • Teaching the core language areas
  • Teaching early phonics
  • Inspiring learners in creativity and culture
  • Giving constructive feedback and demonstrating progress
  • Settling into your host family

The course is self-paced, with each lesson combining videos and text to offer you a choice of learning methods.


You will be supported by one of our experienced TEFL teachers with personal homestay tutoring experience, including three months of access to our monthly online consultation sessions and individual email support. You can communicate with other au pairs and homestay tutors through our dedicated forums, thus providing a network of support and advice available throughout the course.

The course is assessed through a combination of interactive quizzes, lesson participation and short written assignments.

Entry requirements

To ensure you are able to fully benefit from the course, it is important that it is at the appropriate level for you. Therefore, the following entry requirements apply:

  • Acceptance onto the Abridge Homestay Tutor, Lopair Homestay Tutor, Lopair Au Pair China or other pre-approved partner program


  • Minimum upper intermediate level of English (if you are unsure, please contact us for an informal language assessment before purchasing)
  • Completed high school, including pass grades in English language (or equivalent for your native language) and a foreign language
  • Applying for or currently completing a homestay tutor or au pair program involving a significant element of teaching English as a foreign language

If you are unsure if you meet these entry requirements, please feel free to contact us before enrolling on the course. We are able to conduct informal language assessments and take into account any relevant professional experience where appropriate.

    As a current au pair, some of the curriculum i was able to learn during my time as an au pair, but most of the content was new for me to learn! This gave me new ideas to try, and new methods for teaching. This course was very helpful and insightful
